Genl O.O. Howard
Thanks for the prompt attention to our Land Agency as shown in thy favor of 13th & 11th form Alexandria. I shall return the map. Prices are higher than some of our projectors think safe; but I say to them we must not provide land for the Freedmen which will not now, or very soon, with tolerable tillage, yield them a living. They are not the men to expect much very much of, in the first two years of recuperation. Now my dear Friend we must soon effect on organization and put our plan squarely and candidly before the public. We want a few true liberal sagacious and tough men to break the way and work out the first conditions of the problem. Then we want some backers as men of experience and influence - lastly we want to place the problem thus fairly stated and supported before monied liberal men to get the means. This we might work or whilst we are selecting the site or sites. Will Genl H accept the Treasurer's responsibility and suffer his name to go with an appeal or manifest for soliciting subscribers each of whom shall be a member?
Affectionately, W. Warner
