Bvt M. Gen. O. O. Howard

Dear Sir
It wd have gratified me much to see you when you called at my office a few days since, as I wished much to confer with you about our work. The union of the two Branches of our Church will enable us to carry forward our operations among the Freedmen with greater efficiency and to a much greater extent, I trust. Hitherto the energies of the Prest. chh. have not been fully roused to the importance and claims of this work. We shall try to wake them up when reunited.

Among the matters of which I wished to speak is our work in South Carolina. We have sent there several missionaries, well-educated, and fully qualified for the work. They are laboring exclusively for the colored people. Wherever they can they are gathering schools, over which we are placing teachers. They find a great want of school houses, & need help to build. Among the places where such houses are greatly needed, are Yorkville & Chester. We have made application to the Bureau for aid to build in each of these places.
