October 19th 9.

Mrs Josephine Shaw Lowell
Secy of the N.Y. Branch of Amer. Freedmen's Union Commission
North Shore. Staten Island
New York

Madame:
Will you please inform this office at your earliest convenience of the name and location of the several teaching colored schools, employed by your society, in the State of Tennessee.

This information is desired in order to determine how much of the limited appropriations for educational purposes in this State can be devoted to the repair and construction of school buildings for Freedmen, after providing for the payment of the rental accounts of the several benevolent associations operating in Tennessee.

Can you furnish a few teachers to new locations.

Very respectfully
Your obedient servant
C. E. Compton
Bvt. Lt Col. U.S. Army
Supt of Education
Tennessee.
