the colored race, that considerable advancement had been made in both schools, during the term, particularly in the Athens school, taught by Mrs. M.E. Truesdell.   Mrs. Truesdell is entitled to the grattitude of the Colored people of that section, for her self sacrificing devotion to their interests, both personal and educational, displayed during a residence among them of over three years; the first two of which was signalized by a cruel opposition from the rebel element, that few women could have withstood. I enclose herewith her report at the close of her term; the only report received from teachers this month

I have written the County Superintendents of Education for Marion, Sequatchie, Bledsoe, Rhea, Meigs & Polk Counties, asking them to forward me a statement, of the condition of the Colored Schools in their several counties; and enclosed a form for their guidance.  No response has as yet been made to any of the communications; as soon as recieved, if at all, I will forward them.

The following statement shows that amount of back pay & bounty paid, excolored soldiers through this office during the month of Dec, 1868
