resume it. I do not seek for positions - but if there is work in the Bureau that I can do I should be glad of the means of continuing my labors here. If there is no work which I can do in the Bureau of course I do not wish or expect to be retained on salary. My work for the Americans Missionary Association in connection with Fisk University has been severely criticized not only by officers of other societies supporting schools here but by Bureau officials hence I feel a little sensitive about the matter. 

I beg have to refer you to Mr. Langston who knows me and mine, well and can give you any information you may desire. 

I have occupied an anomalous position so long I am anxious to know what to expect - whatever it is don't leave me in a position where I shall have it thrown up to me that I am retained here "by special fancy of the Commissioners."

I am here to work and work I expect to whether in this sphere or that, whether I draw salary or not. I have the heart to be General
