The portrait of the Cardinal came first, done in the CarchevĂȘchĂ© at Malines. Before she met the Cardinal, Miss Beaux had spent some though one the matter of color in the portrait. She did not love red and black and hoped for robes which would permit her to blend red and violet. At the moment she stood in the presence of the Cardinal, all concern for color faded away. Along with it went any though of a portrait where rich textured cloth would be precisely arranged to convey splendid values. Before her stood a man whom she knew instantly had "the grandeur, the universality, and unconsciousness of Nature." He was "the shepherd towering over the wolf, a father fearless before savages who are seeking the lives of his children. Moral grandeur in action. Impossible to reach this height, but the Cardinal must be standing, the head slightly bent, and, somehow be attained, the semblance of a forward movement ... vivid from within only, and this in spite of scarlet and black." In the hourse she passed in the Cardinal's presence, the impression of moral grandeur never left her. Here was a true servant of God, one whose heart was always near the altar, one wha had, too, the more earthly qualities of friendliness and humor. Miss Beaux was to learn that his gratitude to America for its aid made Cardinal Mercier especially kind to all Americans, for whom he felt a friendship "[[italicized]]vraiment intime.[[/italicized]]" The need to portray the Cardinal solely from within posed new problems for Miss Beaux. She met them gladly. "The delights of the eye," she writes, "and the enchanting glamour it was used to throw around the chosen and visible must be held in abeyance; I must not depend upon correct or even much posing. I must construct through knowledge gained little by little." The portrait iteself is the best evidence of her success. The balck and scarlet of the Cardinal's robes are only the background for the spirit "vivid from within." The tall slim figure receals the strength of disciplined control; the face is gentle and, at the same time, firm; the eyes see into far distances. When she first saw the Cardinal, Miss Beaux felt that his benignity seemed to reach down and lift her up. That is precisely the impression created by her
