Sunday afternoons were spent in our partitioned-off alcoves, presumably in contemplation and prayer; actually they were spent in feasting on cakes and candies passed surreptitiously over the partitions. The Bible was passed in the same way with passages marked to amuse those whose curiosity might turn in that direction. I was too young to understand why this should cause such paroxysms of stifled laughter.

On the whole, at St. Catherine's it was not difficult to acquiesce in the worship of a beneficent God, but even so, there was still a mother, spirits, and ghosts, which had to be taken into consideration. One hoped that HE would help in some future need.
