he was following by post. He explained that he wished to keep his mind away from the war and though no longer young, he had decided to learn how to draw, to become an artist. He showed me various text-books on art received by post and he displayed with much pride his own drawings that had been sent back to him after approval. From me he was seeking admiration, not criticism. "Anyone can learn how to draw," said D. di D. To be sure, anyone can learn how to draw, thought I, but to draw as an artist born to the manner, is not so simple. The magic sesame that opens the door of art comes not by post, not even by the King's post. It may be that it is whispered to one before the Ego is born.

November 12th. Three air-raids today. In the evening, from the terrace came excited exclamations. Hundred of lighted balloons were floating down making an alarming display. The radio tells us that Wells in his last book strongly advocates the bombing of the Vatican City. The Pope, (he writes), has always been an enemy of the Allies (how is it that we have always had the contrary impression?). The seat of Catholicism must be destroyed. Evidently Wells had been favourably impressed by his visit to Moscow!
