*Note: Ellsworth Kelly's shaped canvas dated 1953/was not documented until 1972, when Sam Hunter described it as a fusion of "an empirical observation of nature with the Constructivist tradition" ([[underlined]]American Art of the Twentieth[[/underlined]]Century, p.000).  Clearly, Clark was working from different premises [[strikethrough]]could not have seen Kelly's work at this time.[[/strikethrough]] and would not have considered [[strikethrough]]it[[/strikethrough]] Kelly's work a precedent even if [[strikethrough]]he had seen it[[/strikethrough]][[strikethrough]]it had been [[?]][[/strikethrough]] he had been able to it then.
