Sagaponack
Day I

Phil, I suppose I should start with love & thanks & appreciation, but I think I'll skip all that & get down to the hard core stuff.

I think everything in the essay is bright & I honestly think that I tried to get where I got pretty much the way you told it. The only problem for me is to think about my thinking as having been that clever. I'm more inclined to my father's thinking - blind luck & inept competition - as he said "some kids were born with silver spoons in their mouths, but you were born with a golden horseshoe up your ass."

The other obvious problem is Michael. ? He has one trump card - Morris Louis. Louis had the abstraction & the openess nailed down. He is an undeniable & authentic successor to Matisse & Pollock. And it was the weight of the three of them (although God knows any one would have been enough) that killed me & the Protractor ptgs. In passing, I think that it was probably Bill Rubin's enthusiasm

Transcription Notes:
done Review Note: the question mark after 'Michael.' is a reference by some other person than the author, in the same ink underlining "trump card". It's in a different blue ink than the pencil of the author.
