Starting in 1956 the Minami Gallery held over 250 exhibitions until its untimely closure due to the sudden passing of gallery owner Kusuo Shimizu. 1959’s Jean Fautrier exhibition was followed by a series of exhibitions by overseas artists such as Sam Francis and Jasper Johns and helped to spread their names in the country.
