DEPARTMENT OF STATE
BUREAU OF EDUCATIONAL AND CULTURAL AFFAIRS

September 21, 1966

Mr. Jasper John
c/o Leo Castelli Gallery
4 East 77th Street
New York, New York

Dear Mr. John:

We have received a request from our Embassy at Montevideo, Uruguay, for a visit by an American artist to give lectures and demonstration classes and to travel with a small exhibit of his works within the country. The visit would be for one month sometime between late February and June 1967. The Embassy reports that it is planning a two-week program in Montevideo and two weeks in the interior and states that it can effectively display thirty medium-size works or forty-five small ones. Since most of your current work is probably larger than "medium size," this may cut down on the number you would be able to show.

The Department would of course carry the burden of crating and transporting your paintings to and from Uruguay. It would also pay your air economy travel and provide a travel allowance for miscellaneous expenses, a living allowance while in Uruguay, plus compensation in lieu of salary.

If you should be interested and wish to be considered for this project, I should appreciate your completing and returning the enclosed biographic information form. I am also enclosing a leaflet describing the American Specialists Program, the program under which you would travel to Uruguay.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

William P. O'Brien
