Scene 3rd

The child still sleeps on alone the window is softly opened and a dark face peers in. The old gypsy enters stealthily through the window - glances fearfully around. creeps to the bed - takes from it the little boy still sleeping - conceals him beneath her cloak - exit hastily. 

Music and the sound of dancing feet heard in the distance all the while - when it stops - the maid reenters flushed and out of breath, and looking back smiling and throwing a kiss at her lover but stopped in horror to find the bed empty - clasps her hands in despair - then rushes

by the bed-side and her lover trying to comfort her -- whom she repulses reproachfully. Scene closed. 

Scene 4th
Maid still weeping and wringing herd hands -- starts up in terror at the sound of a step -- the mother enters but recoil at the sight of the empty bed and the maid's pale face. The latter falls on her knees supplicated with clasped hands for forgiveness. The mother flies to the bed -- lifts her clasped hands to Heaven in agony, then falls upon her knees burying her face
