PART 1st.  SCENE 1st

An elegant chamber, with a child's little white bed, upon which sleeps the little one, his curls out-spread upon the pillow, the little shoes sundry play-things scattered upon the floor, and his clothes hanging on a chair. Near the bed sits the maid, sewing. Enter, the mother dressed for a ball, goes to the bed-side, strokes the curls back from the little face, stoops to kiss it, (maid all absorbed in contemplating the lady's dress and looks all around her) turns to the maid (who instantly folds her hands and looks dutiful) points to her baby and charged the maid by earnest gesticulations to be very watchful, the maid nods and protests vehemently, but every time the mother turns from her, to lean over the little one, resumes her curious admiration, the mother goes to the door, but returns for a last kiss, and renewed charges of faithfulness.

SCENE 2nd.

Exit the mother looking back. Maid sits down to her sewing, rising frequently to brush away the flies or straighten the covers of the little bed. Finally music is heard without, she throws down her work, and starts joyfully to run out, then glancing regretfully towards the
