These intangibles or indefinable quantities are not an end in themselves. The function of the picture is merely to enable the spectator to employ his powers of contemplation in the direction indicated. This I have learned not so much from painters as from writers and composers of music. I refer more particularly to Goethe, Joyce, Dostoyevsky, Bach, Shoenberg, Bartok and of course many others.
