"Stone, Wood Metal," a simple but forceful title, summarizes in its three words the essences of the current exhibition of sculpture at Staempfli, 47 E, 77th st. The work is modern, by Brancusi, Giacometi, Matisse, Tinguely and others; but in a mystical sense it has its roots in a man's earliest involvement with the basic materials of the show, as George W. Staempfli points out in the introduction to the catalogue.

He seems to work with meteorites and captures lightning-- so dynamic are the bronzes by Italian sculptor Umberto Mastroianni, currently at Galeria Bonino, 7 W. 57th st. Abstractions, they often evoke figures, with hollow "eyes" transfixing the viewer. Also shown are vivid bas-reliefs and etchings.

Marisol, who weds wit to wood in her clever sculptures (with drawing), has gone Pop in her new show at Stable Gallery, 33 E. 74th st. A real baby carriage and a sofa are involved. The attractive face that keeps reappearing is her own.
