On behalf of the freedmen of the Hartsville Civil District (No 1) of Sumner Co. Tenn. We beg leave respectfully to submit to you the following statement and application for aid in erecting a schoolhouse for their benefit.
1st A good and sufficient warrantee deed for an eligible site for a house a has been secured.  See accompanying certificate of the Sumner Co. Court Clerk.

2nd The freed people of the district erected a house for a school, which of late was burned to the ground by persons unknown, but it is now deemed sate to rebuild.

3rd There is a scholastic population of 200 to be provided with school privileges.

4th, The colored people can raise $200.00 toward paying for the premises.

5th, Nothing has hitherto been done by the Government in their behalf.

In view of these, and many other considerations arising out of their helpless condition, we respectfully solicit-aid to the extent of six hundred dollars (600.00) which we deem necessary for the public service.
