received letters of a similar tenor. There are however many claims of considerable magnitude that can be collected if forced. I forward to you this report of the condition of the claims, because I observe in Capt. Gile's report of 15th ult. the opinion expressed that 70% of the claims can be collected at an expense of 16 @ 18% of collections. With much respect for the opinion of Capt Gile (through whom, I think no more faithful or efficient officer has been in this Department) I beg to say, that since he left Beaufort for Florida, my opportunities for information have been better than his. In Charleston District the collections have chiefly been made
