War Department,
Adjutant General's Office
Washington, December 28, 1870

George O. Glavis, Esq.
P.O. Box, 6732.
New York City

Sir,
Referring to your communication of the 6th instant, relative to your dismissal from the service as Chaplain in 1866, and asking that the sentence of the court be revoked; I am directed by the Secretary of War to inform you that it is beyond the power of the Executive to set aside or modify the sentence of a competent court once duly approved and executed.
The utmost that could legally be done in your case would be to remove the disability to reenter the service, imposed by the sentence of dismissal.

Very respectfully
