New York, New York

Dear Mr. Judd:
You may have seen in the press an announcement of a National Competition for Playground Sculpture instituted by the Corcoran School of Art. It was made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and matching funds provided by Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Zlotnick of Washington, D. C.

The Competition has now taken an exciting turn. The editors of Art in America - Jean Lipman, Anthony Bower and Ruth Wolf, and Elton Robinson, art director - will participate in the selection of the winners.

The December 1967 issue of Art in America will feature playground sculpture; Mrs. Lipman feels that our Competition is strategically timed a might well provide the feature article.

In our discussion with Mrs. Lipman we talked about artists currently working in plastics or other new materials, and who would be interested in creating the type of sculpture we visualize as the final result of the Playground Competition. Mrs. Lipman has given us your name and suggested we invite you to participate. In the hope that you will do so, we are attaching a copy of the announcement as well as the application form.

In the prospectus, you will note, we have been rather specific about the size of the finished piece. As a result of recentj discussions, however, we have concluded to advise participants that we are prepared to relax these specifications if the artist feels they are too confining. If you have any questions, we shall be delighted to furnish any additional information you may need.

Your participation in this project would add greatly to its success and we hope that we will hear from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Eugene E. Myers
Dean
