Dear Miss Bearman:

Thank you for your letter of May 11 regarding the unfortunate damage to one of the boxes by Donald Judd shipped to the Washington Gallery of Modern Art. We are very distressed to learn of this deplorable sequel to the showing here. Our staff packed the boxes in exactly the same way as we received them and they were in perfect condition when shipped; it would appear that they suffered rough handling in transit.

I am notifying our insurance company and will be in contact also with the Washington Gallery, where I assume the box still is, for it will have to be inspected by the adjusters.

We will proceed with the filing of a claim as soon as the necessary inspections are made and we have the requisite documents in our hands. Please be assured of my regret in this matter and of our willingness to see it to a satisfactory conclusion.

Sincerely yours,
George L. McKenna
