re: untitled Judd
Sculpture: "wallbox"type"

Pat Arnold:

On December 13. 1972. Cart and Crate informed us. [[strikethrough]] that [[/strikethrough]] a sculpture of Don Judd's was shipped to him here in New York. The freight company was never able to contact Don. (C.O.D.!) and it was returned to Cart and Crate, and after several letters you finally picked up the bill. including storage charges, and paid it. This prevented the sculpture being turned over to Cart and Crate's possession.

Don Judd was never aware of his piece being "somewhere in New York". He has been on several trips this fall, and admittedly the mail has gone unanswered, sometimes.

Now, Don would like it if you could please send his sculpture, pre-paid, back to the Leo Castelli Gallery, 4 East 77the St. (use Budworth, not Hague, as they have damaged Don's work too much). Unfortunately, the Gallery sent this sculpture to you, without his knowledge, although he has very willingly and enthusiastically sent you woodcuts, going back to 1969. One time, the letters referring to this were sent over (I think they were) to the gallery, for them to deal with this, and supposedly they didn't. Sorry for the confusion, and my lack of references to the facts in '72-'73 letters. I do have a letter of November 13, and 23rd from Barbara Trees of Cert and Carte. I phoned their New york office on December 3rd, but it all got lost in the shuffle, no one phoned back about this.

I am sorry for all this mess, maybe the freight company was too in-efficient.
