VERY SAD.——R. E. Pattison, D.D., sends us this question: "What must be the piety of those colored churches whose preachers never read and cannot read to them a chapter in the Bible? I heard one such preach a few Sabbaths since who did not even open the Bible."

Washington D. C.

Very Dear Sir:

We are pleased to learn of Dr. Vogell's interview with you, & that you will at once honor vouchers made out by Dr. V. for the Leland University building at New Orleans, to the extent of sixty per-cent, as indicated in yours to me of April 11th, the remaining forty per-cent of the $33,000 still due us, to be paid by you at a later date when in funds.

Dr. V. is at work on the vouchers. We hope to send them to you soon. If paid promptly it will cheer our dear old Deacon of N. Orleans, who has expended there about $17,000 & us also who have expanded as much more at that point, all for Freedmen's Education. Yours truly James B. Simmons

[] P.S. Our agent at N. Orleans may not be skilled in making vouchers, so that we are pleased that you have decided to honor Dr. V's. []
