She says that Runkle took her into a room separated apart from all others at the time he paid her, & when he handed her the money she asked him how much it was, he replied $98- She said that was not all that was due her, to which he replied only by telling her to take a paper in which he handed her [[cross-out]] in [[/cross-out]] to a gentleman in adjoining room, which she did.

She states positively that whatever the receipt may be for, that she only received $97- and desires that you will give her such directions as will enable her to collect the balance or if she has been cheated out of it how she shall proceed to investigate the matter so that she may obtain redress, either pecuniarily, or by having the guilty party punished. Your attention to this matter will very much oblige an old, infirm woman who gave her son to the cause of the Union, & is in absolute need of the means which he earned in the service of the government.
Yr Very Respectfully
