Genl Whittlesey - Mr. Harris is a colored man - highly respectable and respected - He has worked faithfully for his race and has done a great deal of good. He was of great service to the Mil. Commission sent in Dec '69 to investigate Bounty frauds - and our Commission believed him to be a thoroughly honest, conscientious man.

He is well off - being a storekeeper and having a good [[sum?]] of trade.

I just say this that you may know something of the writer more than he says himself, and at his solicitation for I do not think he even knows my name.
