Maj. Gen. O.O. Howard,
Sir: I find it necessary to apply to you for employment to enable me to pay tuition and continue my studies. I am in debt to the University Sixty dols ($60.00), on the last term, with no prospect to meet the expenses of the coming term. 

Considering the above, I respectfully apply for a Clerkship in one of the Offices under your control.

Hoping for a favorable consideration at your earliest conveniance. I have the honor to remain, Sir, your humble Servant
