The governor is against us on the sly or else he would not have allowed John Jackson Jr. (cold) to have been sent to the penitentiary without being presented to a grand jury: and also having no witness against him: Capt J.P Richardson (bureau) Took the Rebels Testimony alone, against the afore said Jackson and suffered him to be sentenced to the penitentiary for one 1 year; the said Jackson's mother, her son, being under age. appeared to the governor's justice, and he would give him (not.) a new hearing: Seeing it were in his power to do so: but shortened his time to six 6 months: 22 others at same time went with him: Sentenced with Illegal poof: the Governor was well aware of this and saw the dodges of the reconstruction Law in it. it is supposed here, that Gov. Darius and the courts of this state are bribed by the railroad companies to convict freed men to the penitentiary to build their railroads through this state: and it seems from the Governor's action, it seems to be a true supposition: this will prove the Governor detrimental to Cold. people; We know them by the acts of King Pharaoh at the red sea: he lied to god and he lied to Moses and so these will to you: and am very respectfully your hum servant
