Dear Sirs, 
The colored christians of this vicinity are endeavoring to build a church which will also be used for a school house. Their means are almost exhausted and without assistance, they will ultimately fail. They have appealed to me for aid, we have done what we could for them, which is but little, for the white christians are nearly as destitute as our colored brethren, and their last appeal is to your liberality.

Had our friend Gen'l Miles remained in Raleigh it might not have been necessary to make this appeal, his heart was in the right place.
