Dear Sir:

Your favor of the 19th inst came duly to hand.  I regret that my communication addressed to Gen Howard in the interest of Gen Butler, John Gray & John Freedmen was misunderstood.  My application was not for aid for school.  But for the payment of an appropriation which was made, if memory serves me right, the latter part of Aug, first part of Sept. last of $250 - 

It was ordered by Gen Howard himself.  Maj Vanderlip wrote in Oct last whose letter I have, "You can assure those people that the promised aid will be forthcoming when that amt will complete their building,
