Springvale, Humboldt Co., Iowa,
June 8th, 1871.

Gen. Howard,

Dear Sir:- Would there be a good opening for a teacher in a colored school, in the region recently infested by the K.K.K. this fall, say in Aug. or Sept.? What compensation could be expected? Would the Bureau furnish transportation? or have you closed your labors in this direction?

If you should not deem it safe to go to the scene of the recent outrages, do you know of any other good opening?

Respectfully yours.
Andrew J. Cushing, V.D.M.
