Gen. O. O. Howard,
Commissioner Bureau R. F. and A. L.

General:-
When I resigned my place in the Bureau to take charge of the Stevens School, General Whittlesey informed me that, if any clerks were retained during the summer in the Bureau, I would be appointed again. I resigned with this understanding only. My school will close on the 30th inst., and I would most respectfully ask to be reappointed in the Bureau. When I have paid all my debts I find I will not have money to pay my expenses home and return.

Very respectfully
Your obedient servant
Jas. M. Gregory
