Sir:
Referring to your letter of the 17th instant, [[strikethrough]] respecting [[/strikethrough]] requesting information as to whether Robert N. Davis, late Captain 104th U.S.C.T. was authorized to take depositions in South Carolina in 1865. In reply I have the honor to state that the records for the office of the Asst Commr for the state of S.C. for the year of 1865, are not in possession of this Bureau they having been retained by Genl R. Saxton late Asst Commr. The records of this office do not show any such authorization; yet many officers of this Bureau were appointed Justices of Freedmens Courts throughout the South, and in this capacity were accustomed to take depositions
Very respectfully,
O O H Brig Gen U.S.A Commissioner
