Bureau Refugees Freedmen &c Officer Asst. Disbursing Officer Vicksburg Miss July 27, 1871. Bvt. Brig Genl E. Whittlesey A.A.A. General Bu R.F. & A.L. Washington D.C. General. I have the honor to request a leave of absence for (40) Forty days, commencing August 7th 1871. My reasons for making this application are as follows. I have received an order from the Surgeon General for an artificial leg under the provisions of Act of Congress approved June 17, 1870. and I desire to visit Philadelphia Pa for the purpose of having it fitted. I am also anxious to embrace this opportunity to visit my home in Middletown, Conn. As this is my first application for a leave since I have been on duty in this Bureau. (April 5, 1866) and at the time specified the duties of this office being light - as the freedmen are hard at work in their (over)
