Sir:
I have the honor to request that you will, at your earliest convenience, furnish this Department after the 30th day of September next with as much of the material relating to your Department, as is required to be embodied in the Biennial Register for 1871, in compliance with the Joint Resolutions of Congress, approved April 27th 1816 and July 14th 1832, and the proviso to the Appropriation Act of March 3rd, 1851; - See Statutes at Large, Vol 3, page 342; VOL 4 Page 608; and Vol 9 page 600  An effort will be made to secure the publication of the Register at an earlier day than heretofore, hence, a prompt compliance with the foregoing request is (over
