I have the honor to apply for an appointment as Agent or Clerk in the Bureau under your command. I served as an officer of the army during the late Rebellion and up to the present year in the Regular army. At the 2nd Bull Run Battle I lost my left arm at the elbow joint; at Chancellorsville, I was wounded severely in the scrotum. At the final days fight of Gettysburgh, I was again wounded in the right leg. While an officer in the 45th Infl. V.R.C. I served as A.A.A. Genl: & Disbg Officer of the Bureau R.F.& A.L. for the state of Tenn. under Brig Genl W.P. Carlin 16th Inft and Bvt Lt. Col James Thompson, 2d U.S. Art: from both of the above named officers (as well as all I've served under) I have excellent recommendation. I was for nearly two years connected with the Bureau, and am thoroughly conversant with its workings. The loss of my arm incapacitates me from resuming my former trade, i.e. painter: I am desirous of obtaining something to do to obtain an honest-livelihood, as
