General:
Agreeably to instructions of the Commissioner dated the 5th inst. I have the honor to lay before you the following report, embracing a brief sketch of the operations of the Medical Department of the Bureau for the fiscal year commencing July 1st, 1870 and ending June 30th, 1871.
At the date of my last Annual Report there remained in operation only one Hospital, viz: the Freedmens Hospital in this city. The Hospital at Richmond Va. having been closed Febr'y 1st, 1870.

The following table shows the number of Freedpeople treated in Washington D.C. during the period commencing July 1st, 1870 and ending June 30th, 1871.

The majority of the Patients now in Hospital are so helpless from bodily infirmity or
