for their support and Medical Attendance
As I have before mentioned in my previous Report, the Local authorities of the Dist. were repeatedly appealed to prior to making the present provision, but they stated that these people were never properly speaking residents of the District, but were in here during the war and that they were unable and and unwilling to assume the burden of their support.
These unfortunate cripples, infirm and aged people are now well provided for, and is not likely, from the nature of things, that they can for many years be a burden to the Government and I feel convinced that as heretofore Congress will continue to make suitable appropriation for their support, when the subject is brought to their attention.
I have also the honor to enclose herewith an Estimate of the Amount that will be required for the maintenance of the Freedmens Hospital for the fiscal year commencing July 1st 1872, and ending June 30th 1873.
