Genl,
Your esteemed favor is rec'd stating that the pay of the State for their schools is too small for the two teachers you mentioned & ask the amount of pay the Bureau allows. I am allowed to pay $40 a month & transportation both ways. I am paying one male teacher a Professor of the Higher English branches, Latin etc., $50 a month. I want to place two good teachers on Hilton Head Island but am not yet sure of good quarters for them. Expect to have an answer from the owner of a good house there, this week when I will write to you at once. I do not advise anyone to come to Beaufort just yet as we still have some [[?]] & persons coming from the North are more liable to get it. A week or two hence will be time enough for the schools.
Very Respectfully Nelson R Scovel
