General O.O. Howard
Commissioner of Freedmens Bureau
Washington D.C

Sir

When Mr Cook your chief clerk was here, he disabused my mind in regard to some impressions against you. But than recently at Clarksville and from I learned while there think I had I should cease any further correspondence with you - and in place of Sunday those 12 or 15 Claims in the hands of McMullen you send them of Mr IB Coony of Nashville - Some of those Claimants from 50 to near 100 miles from Nashville and cannot afford to go there and take witness with them in order to get them money Your man McMullen has run off from Clarks with a large amt of the colored peoples money - near $800 where I am guardian for some colored children while I have the children to fee and clothe - you were long ago advised what a scoundrel he was, there is but two men in Clarksville that will say he is an honest man

I requested you to return my Duplicate Receipts you have returned some but not all you should not keep my receipts and not send me the money you have had them over a month

yours with respect D S Hays
