Genl O O Howard

Dear Sir

A statement made by a so-called "Special Commissioner" correspondent of the N Y. Journal of Commerce is copied into a recent number of the Cotton Supply Reporter of England

In it he states that 20000 colored children have been taught to read and write since the war.

I should be glad of an estimate from you of the real number in order that this absurd under estimate may be corrected.

A concise statement of the present number of teachers & pupils will be welcome

Yrs truly
