Dear Sir
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your communication of yesterday enclosing the Commissioner's check No. 80. for One hundred and five and 20/100 dollars for the payment of Alfred H. Baker on account of prize money and back-pay due him from the U.S. on account of services as landsman on the U.S.S. DeSoto, and to state I have this day paid over to him the above amount and enclose herewith his receipt for the same. This receipt is not upon the blanks printed by the Bureau for the simple reason that I had none.
