Sir:

I have the honor to inform you that Maria Drain (widow of John Drain, decd, late pvt Co "H", 5th U.S.C. Cavy) has appeared before the Commission sitting here, and states that the amount paid you on her order dated Oct 28th, 1871, was not on account of money loaned her as stated, but on account of Fees.  You will please report in the case at once furnishing such proof of having loaned her money as you may have, giving amounts, dates, etc.
