Genl Pope told me of him, he shall have the hearty cooperation of our commission, while it continues its labors.

Some of the Col Regiments have evinced a desire to erect in Washington City a monument to Mr Lincoln commemorative of their gratitude to him. The thought I think a good one, upwards of seven thousand dollars has already been sent to me for that purpose without solicitation or effort. Several parties feel that their efforts should be encouraged, and have determined after consultation that a Freedmans Lincoln monument association should be organized, and if you think favorably of it, would like to have the aid of your counsel and name in influencing and directing the monument. There are to be no salaried secretaries or officers, so that every cent raised shall be used for the purpose indicated. Hoping that you will give your consent. I remain
