[[margin]] I have the money GW Balloch Col VCS [[/margin]]

Galesburg Ills. August 22d 1865.

Maj Genl O.O. Howard.
Washington D.C.

Sir
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of the Affidavit of Reuben Sherman (Colored) forwarded from your Head Quarters, in which he claims pay for Services rendered as Co Cook G. Co. 103d Ill Infty. (marked "E.B. 38 1865.")

Reuben is in error in stating that while in the Co he was other than a private Servant for the Cap't and myself

The money due him from me was kept at his own request, as he was fearful of being robbed - I had just been relieved from duty as A.A.Q.M. Mil Dis Miss when he was taken with the smallPox and sent to the Hospital

over.
