New Orleans La.
August 18th 1865.

Major General O.O. Howard
Washington D.C.

General
I received the enclosed papers, by mail, this morning and acknowledge the correctness of Reuben's statement, except in the following particulars. He says he has received nothing from us, save $50.00 from Lt. Matteson. I am satisfied that I have in clothing (new) & money paid him at least $50.00 & I think, nearer $100.00. His name never appeared on the payrolls while I was with the company, and I am almost certain never did during my absence: - While our Regt. was at Washington, Lieut Matteson was "on leave" and I did not meet him after leaving Savannah Ga. until at Louisville Ky.
