War Department
Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands,
Washington, Aug. 11th, 1865.

My Dear General.

Yesterday I reached Washington. I tried very hard to get here by the 1st inst, but after I reached Augusta Ga, I found that I had to go to Washington Ga. to meet Genl Wild. which place I left on Aug 2d, and came back as fast as steam could bring me. I am very sorry that I did not meet you here, as there are very many things that I wish to talk about with you, that I perhaps cannot well tell in a letter, but I will mention all that I can herein. Please excuse the style of this letter, as I must write in haste, so that I may attend to several letters and matters that are now awaiting attention.
