I think the description of the terms "abandoned land" should be a little more complete, to meet the understanding of all of the Asst. Commrs. of the Bureau. While south I discovered a wide difference of opinion on this subject.

My last letter was written to you, I think, from Beaufort S.C.  on July 28th,. The afternoon of the same day I visited Edisto Island, where I remained all night.  This is the best cultivated  of all of the Sea Islands. The crops of cotton and corn are good, and they are well worked by the freedmen thereon.
