State of Maryland
County of St Marys   s.s.

Milly Sewell, colored, of the State & County above mentioned, being sworn says:  That on the morning of the 18th inst on the plot of ground rented by her from Mrs. James Wood near Harrisburgh in said County she was beaten by the said Mrs. James Wood, without just cause or provocation, being struck over the arms and head, injuring the same very much.
   
Deponent further says that said James Wood threatened her before she made the assault, as above described, saying that she would take a club so that she could maim or kill deponent; and the only cause for such conduct on the part of said Mrs. Wood, deponent thinks is the emancipation of the colored people, Mrs. Wood being prejudiced against such emancipation.
