Jacob Giles, being duly sworn, testifies - that in August, 1864, he went to Prince George Co. Md. to see his family who were living with Mr. Geo. W. Hardisty - that the said Hardisty threatened to "take him into the bush & give him 200 lashes" - that Mr. Richard Hardisty, brother of Geo. W. Hardisty, interfered in this - & that he - (Geo. W.H.) then threatened to cut deponents throat "from ear to ear"; That he was driven away & not allowed to see his family until Mr. Richard Hardisty interfered & procured permission for him to do so.

That in January last said Geo. W. Hardisty, who was in charge of his sister's (Miss Mary Hardisty's) farm, hired his son, Wm. Giles, aged about 19 years, agreeing to pay him $10.00 per mo, but that they now refused to pay him. - That in July last, his son Wm. - in consequence of ill usage, left the said Geo. W. Hardisty, but was arrested & taken before a J.P. & remanded back to the custody of Mr. H. - That which in the presence of the J.P. deponent asked permission to speak in behalf of his son, in regard to the money due him - whereupon the said Geo. W. Hardisty did violently assault & beat him, & Deponent verily believes, that had it not been for the interference of Thos. Clark the J.P. who was present, he would have been killed. (over)
