This Indenture, made this ... day of ..., in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and [[strikethrough]] Seventy , between Oliver O. Howard and Elizabeth A. Howard his wife, of the city and county of Washington District of Columbia of the first part, and D.S. Eaton and George W. Stickney, of the city and county aforesaid ... of the second part:
Whereas the said parties of the first part are justly indebted to the Freedmen's Saving's and Trust Company, a corporation created by and existing under an Act of Congress approved March 3, 1865. - in the sum of twenty four thousand dollars ($24,000.00) for which amount they hold the promissory note of the said parties of the first part, of even date herewith for the sum of twenty four thousand dollars, payable twelve months after date, with interest at the rate of Twelve per centum per annum,

And whereas the said parties of the first part are desirous to secure the full and punctual payment of said note, and all interest, costs and expenses that may accrue thereon, according to the true intent and meaning of the same.

Now, therefore, this Indenture Witnesseth, That the said parties of the first part, for and in consideration of the premises aforesaid, and, further, the sum of one dollar, in lawful money of the United States, to them in hand paid by the said parties of the second part at and before the scaling and delivery of these presents, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, have granted, bargained, sold, aliened, enfeoffed, released, and conveyed and do
by these presents, grant, bargain, sell, alien, enfeoff, release, and convey unto the said parties of the second part their heirs and assigned forever the following described Real Estate, situate in the County of Washington. District of Columbia, to wit: Lot number eleven (11) in Block no. four (4) in the subdivision of the farm of John A. Smith made by the Howard University, situated on the Seventh Street Road north of and adjoining the city of Washington, according to the plat thereof filed in the office of the Surveyor of the District
